Rivers and watery contexts

By their very nature, caves are an interface between different worlds, making their choice as a ritual setting easy to comprehend. The same applies to watery places and water sources in their many guises. Their role in the votive deposition of coins and other objects was explored in Chapters 3–4, but it is worth emphasising here how many coin hoards have been recovered from watery contexts within a site setting. As we have seen, wet finds occur at all the main categories of site (Fig. 5.39), whether in rivers or streams (London, Piercebridge, St Albans, Sandy), in pools or springs (Buxton, Coventina’s Well) or in artificial channels (Gadebridge Park, Ickham). A total of 30 site hoards were from wet contexts, not counting shafts or wells (e.g. Bar Hill, Mildenhall, Richborough), along with two beach finds near sites (Table 5.8). They span the entire period. The Iron Age coins from the palaeochannel at Sandy are the earliest example (IARCH-FE1D63) and the practice rises in prominence in RP 7–11 and RP 12–14, in line with hoarding generally. Off-site wet and coastal finds share these two high points, but include more Iron Age hoards – albeit principally from the coast and the Thames – and from RP 19 onward. Interestingly, hoards from other kinds of natural places such as rock formations and crevices exhibit a pattern which is again slightly different, as they are concentrated in RP 12–14 and RP 15–18.
