Chapter Twelve

Jackson

When I woke up, I stepped outside to take a look at our surroundings. We had found the perfect spot, it wasn’t really that far away from our last campsite, but because we had just pulled up at the side of the road, away from anywhere populated, it felt like it was a million miles away. The silence that surrounded me allowed me to think clearly for the first time in days. It was so tranquil here; I knew it was the perfect spot for a supernatural to make their home. If I was a crazy person trying to hide dozens of girls, this was exactly the type of place I would bring them.

I walked a short distance into the woods, making sure to stop every now and then take in a deep breath through my nose to familiarize myself with the area’s scents. It was a lot like being back in the woods by the ranch, just on a bigger scale. It was hard not to become overwhelmed by the forest. To a creature like me, this was paradise. It was a shame that the situation I was in was tainting the beauty of the place.

When I went back inside the RV, my family was awake and waiting for me. My dad, Hunter, and I decided to skip breakfast so that we could start the search straight away. The three of us went inside the forest, leaving Masie behind at the van to keep an eye on the twins while they stayed behind to fly the drones. She was also staying behind in case we needed to move the RV. We trusted Masie, and I hoped that she understood why we left her behind. We needed to move fast to cover as much ground as possible, and she would not be able to keep up with us when we were in wolf form. I also knew that my dad felt okay about leaving the twins knowing that she was watching them. Hopefully, they wouldn’t cause her too much trouble while we were away because those two could get into mischief in an empty room.

My dad, Hunter, and I said goodbye to them from the edge of the trees, and we ran deep into the forest where it was safe to change into wolves. We each left our clothes in a rucksack in the bushes and emerged in our wolf form. I had to admit it would have looked very strange if anyone came across us.

My dad was huge, and his wolf was intimidating, to say the least, with his thick black fur-lined with silver streaks. Hunter was also large. He wasn’t as dark as our dad and had golden flecks weaved intricately throughout his coat. I was a mixture of the two. My coat was light with darker bands of black and gold all over my body.

As we ventured deeper into the forest, we decided to split up. The area was so dense we would not be able to cover it in time.
