Be Content (1 Cor. 7:17, 20, 24)
In the early verses of 1 Corinthians 7, Paul focuses on the husband/wife relationship. The rest of the chapter moves into comparing marriage and singleness. It is evident by Paulâs words that his letter comes in response to two groups of people: those who think marriage is Godâs ultimate desire for all people and those who think singleness is the greater, more spiritual way to be used by God. These contrasting teachings confused new believers. If they accepted Jesus as their Savior while single, they thought they needed to get married in order to most please God. If they accepted Jesus as their Savior when already married, they concluded that they needed to divorce their spouse in order to please God more as a single person. Neither way was correct.
To address this misunderstanding, Paul uses circumcision and slavery as examples to challenge all believers to âremainâ in whatever marital state they found themselves. God values both married people and single people equally and can use either marriage or singleness for his glory. Paul uses this concept of âremainingâ to urge the Corinthians to âbe contentâ whether married or single.3 In regards to singleness, Paul admonishes each single man and woman to accept and embrace their current state of singleness and seek ways to maximize the opportunities afforded them during their years as a single person. He urges single men and women to find contentment in the fact that they are currently in the center of Godâs will, and to faithfully seek ways to use this particular time in their life to honor and serve God.
