While conducting white-collar investigations involving businesses and/or business owners, it’s fairly common to check secretary of state records in the state where the suspect business is located and/or where the business owner resides. On several occasions I’ve found that the suspect business owners actually owned two or more additional companies and were committing the same type fraud with their other entities. In one case, I drove by the business address of the suspect company that was providing defective circuit boards to customers. The business address was actually a house in a residential neighborhood. After checking the secretary of state records by the address and by the business owner’s name, I identified two additional existing companies and three more that had since closed down.
