Interpreting Motion Graphs
Ex. 1 Here we will analyze the graph below. The graph gives the motion of a particle moving horizontally for 10 seconds. Determine when the particle is moving forward and when the particle is moving backward.
Solution: This graph gives the position (in meters) of a particle over time (in seconds). The graph will be moving forward when it has a positive velocity. It will be moving backwards when it has a negative velocity. We can find the velocity from this graph by looking at the slopes of the lines. The slope of the left side from t = 0 to t = 6, has a slope of 1/2. The slope on the right side from t = 6 to t = 10 is – 2. Therefore, the particle is moving forward on the interval (0, 6). The particle is moving backward on the interval (6, 10). Notice that at t = 6, the particle switched directions.
