Perversity of the Church
On an amusing but nevertheless pertinent note, Žižek illustrates the Church’s perversity and its desire for what it prohibits with a scene from the film musical The Sound of Music (1965). In this scene Maria, played by Julie Andrews, presses the Mother Abbess to let her take her monastic vows.
BUT I TELL MARIA THAT SHE MUST RETURN TO THE EMBRACES OF CAPTAIN VON TRAPP. AT THIS POINT THE ABBESS BREAKS INTO THE SONG “CLIMB EV’RY MOUNTAIN”.
In the context of the film’s narrative the song is (hilariously) full of sexual innuendo. At the same time the song openly contradicts Maria’s yearning for abstinence.
