A WORKER WILL SOON PRODUCE ENOUGH GOODS TO PAY FOR HIS WAGES, THE MACHINERY HE USES AND THE BUILDING HE WORKS IN. BUT HE WORKS MORE HOURS THAN HIS NECESSITIES REQUIRE. SO, THE CAPITALIST EMPLOYER GETS THE REST.

Workers are the real wealth producers, but they are alienated from what they produce – they do not see that it really belongs to them. β€œThe labour of the many transforms itself into the capital of the privileged few.”

THE END OF CAPITALISM

Thanks to another economist, Adam Smith (1723–90), most 19th century Europeans thought that capitalism was inevitable or even God-given. Marx thought that his scientific approach to economics could accurately predict the final implosion of the capitalist system. Wealth would become concentrated in the hands of the few, whilst the vast majority of the population would be driven into poverty.
