Descartes the Mathematician

Descartes is famous as a mathematician as well as a philosopher. He gave his name to “Cartesian coordinates” and began certain conventions now common to mathematicians, like representing unknowns by the letters x, y and z and knowns by a, b, and c. He invented the modern way of expressing squares and cubes by using small numbers (as in 42). He greatly advanced analytic geometry, which generally makes solving geometric problems simpler. In La Géométrie, Descartes showed how you can use algebra to recognize many typical problems in geometry and bring together those which are related. Partly because of his success in doing this, he came to believe that all human knowledge could eventually be mathematized.
