Perhaps this is why Ruth Gates devoted much of her life to studying and saving these fascinating creatures. In her lab in Kāne‘ohe Bay, Hawai‘i, Gates focused on understanding what makes some corals more resilient during rising ocean temperatures and other stressors. Her groundbreaking work to breed “super corals” offers the hope that with a little help, coral reefs might be able to rebuild following devastating bleaching. Besides her scientific work, her steadfast belief that corals could be saved inspired many people.

Weeks after her death in October 2018, her team received a $1 million grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to attempt to restore reefs in Hawai‘i with super corals. Kira Hughes, the lab’s project manager, said that the team is “beyond excited, as this allows us to carry on Ruth’s research vision. Most importantly, this allows lab members to stay together as a team, so we can carry out research in Ruth’s honor.”
