Tak and Iyaren faced off in the dirt yard of the compound. Tak could feel the strain on his spines as they stood out from his back—hardened and swollen with blood until they were sharp, deadly points. Tension rippled in his muscles, pulling on bone newly-knit. His fists clenched and unclenched as he hissed at the kanta.

Iyaren was taller than him, though not by much, but he was also much heavier. In the midday sunlight, his bulky muscles shifted beneath tan fur as he snarled at Tak.

They wore nothing but loose pants. No armor to protect them from each other. This was as fair a fight as Tak was going to get.

To avoid pissing off Alice—and trapping themselves for another week of healing—they were not going to use weapons.

Tak’s thoughts strayed to Alice when he should have been focusing on Iyaren. She hadn’t been pleased with their efforts to win her. She’d seemed more annoyed than anything by the things they’d brought her, the attention they’d showered on her, and their constant attendance to her every whim.

He’d figured out pretty early on that pampering this female wasn’t going to work, but Iyaren was persistent, and Tak hadn’t wanted to fall behind.

He had to get Alice to choose him, because when she did, the kanta wouldn’t have a choice but to let her go.

Tak’s pheromone just wasn’t enough to guarantee that, though.

He kept a lot of her words to himself—mostly those that told how frustrated she was by the two of them. Let the kanta think he could win her with coddling. Tak had the advantage there. He’d seen that she liked to laugh. It was easy enough to tease her, though it would be easier if she’d understood his words.

Iyaren would be hopeless in that regards. The kanta was too serious, in the way of his warrior caste. Tak doubted he’d ever laughed in his life.

In fact, Tak should have had all the advantage when it came to Alice, but he didn’t, and he knew it. She still looked upon Iyaren with affection in her strange blue eyes. He still tasted her desire in the air when she was near Iyaren, just as he did when she was near him.

She wanted them both. If one of them didn’t back off, then probably neither of them would have her. He suspected that Iyaren would be okay with that, content to worship his female from a distance, never knowing her touch.

Tak ached to claim Alice as his own. His body had stirred for her, and the longer he waited to claim her, the worse it would hurt to deny his release. The fact that he wasn’t even certain whether they would fit together—particularly since her body didn’t prime the way a female Histri’i’s would—was a concern he wouldn’t deal with at this time.

Somehow, he would make them fit, once he won her.

Iyaren’s growl brought his mind back to the current situation. “No fires, Histri’i, unless you truly have no honor.”

Tak wasn’t planning on using his internal flame.
