Chapter Eleven

IT TOOK most of a day, but finally Blake and David recovered enough to be out of danger and returned to quarters to continue their full recovery. Blake was under strict orders from Miller to keep an eye on David’s overall condition and to report any changes to him at once.

As the doors to David’s cabin closed, Blake embraced David as if he was a carton of eggs and gently hugged the man he had fallen in total love with.

“Hey, I’m doing much better. You can put some feeling into that,” David chided.

“I just wanna be careful with you until you’re 100 percent. Let’s go lie down on your bed. I’ll get some cold water for both of us,” Blake said.

“Ahh, that’s the Blake I know, trying to get me into bed the moment we’re alone!”

“To rest. To rest and for nothing else!” Blake responded.

“Oh, this is going to be a fun recuperation period. We’ll see what happens.”

David removed his hospital utility uniform and lay down on his bed. Blake fussed around, putting together water and something to eat from his rations container. When he came through the connecting door to David’s sitting room, he smiled.

“You’re a regular candy striper, aren’t you?” David asked.

“A what?” Blake asked, confused.

“Never mind, just a term I came across when I was looking through the virtual library regarding ancient hospitals. Come here, you cute bastard.”

Blake set the tray down and moved the water to a little stand by the bed. He sat down on the edge and looked the body of his lover over carefully. He wasn’t looking for any reason other than to make sure he saw nothing to alarm himself, and to take inventory that all things were where they were supposed to be.

“I see you checking me out. You horny?” David asked with a smirk.

“How can you even think about sex? You were this close to death only a few hours ago!” Blake said while holding his thumb and index finger together. “In fact, I’d have to consider it a miracle that you did survive what we went through out there in the blackness of space. David, you were dead, basically. You understand that, right?” Blake asked with a tear in one eye.

“Yeah, I guess the doc made me understand that. But you’re missing the most important fact—I’m not dead. Kiss me.”

Blake stared at David for a moment and then bent his head down and kissed his lover gently on the lips. Blake couldn’t help it that the near tragedy that almost happened dampened his urges considerably.

“You call that a kiss?” David asked.

“You don’t get it, do you? You—we almost died together out in space, headed toward a fiery consumption of our remains. If the captain hadn’t brought Condor in to find us, we would not have survived, period. We’re going to pay holy hell for him having to do that instead of me following orders!”

“What orders? What didn’t you do?”

“I was ordered to cut you loose and to make my way back.
