Chapter 10

Two days passed during which Artemis stayed in her office with the door shut. She spoke to no one. Seven retreated to his lab, saying only that there was science to do. Oliver found that he really didn’t have anything to do, himself, so he mostly surfed the Internet in his office. He didn’t mind all that much. Doing nothing often beat whatever insane mission Artemis might send them on.

Artemis sent a group text to the entire team shortly after Oliver and Jeffrey had eaten dinner one night telling them that she wanted to meet first thing in the morning. Oliver made it a point to be on time. Jeffrey insisted on coming in, as well. Normally he accompanied Oliver to the office once a week or so, but he tended to find it boring there. He preferred to stay home to watch television and eat snacks. This promised to be a big day, though, and he’d said he didn’t want to miss it.

A teapot sat on Artemis’s desk with cups ready for everyone. She sipped from an expensive-looking white teacup as the team took their seats. Seven stood in the corner. He rarely sat. Whether that was because he found it uncomfortable or he was just too tense to sit still, Oliver couldn’t say. Seven tended to look like he had just consumed five cups of strong coffee, no matter what time of day it was.

Once they were seated Jeffrey said, “I suppose you’re wondering why I called you all in here today.”

Artemis looked at him. “I believe it was I that called the meeting.”

“Never mind that,” the cat said. “I have an announcement.” He cleared his throat. “The boss here is the god of dangerousness.”

Artemis blinked. “What?”

“We met Death, and he said the boss is the god of dangerous.”

“You met Death?” Tyler asked.

“What the hell?” Sally said.

“He is referring to Thanatos, I presume?” Artemis asked Oliver.

“Yeah,” Oliver said. He scratched Jeffrey behind the ears and the cat purred. “And that’s not what he said. He said I was dangerous, not that I’m the god of dangerous.”

“That is well,” Artemis said. “Because there is no god of dangerous.”

Tyler leaned forward. “What did he want?” His eyes were wide. “He didn’t…I mean, you’re still alive, obviously.”

“He had a warning,” Oliver said. He looked at Artemis. “He said not to go to Atlantis.”

“Ah.” Artemis sipped her tea and gazed out the window at the city for a moment. She seemed unusually downbeat to Oliver. She was always reserved, but today she seemed almost depressed. “Well, I fear we must go to Atlantis. Or at least I must.”

“So it’s real,” Tyler said. “It’s all real. Atlantis was really there.”

“Of course it was,” Artemis said. “Legends almost always have some basis in fact, no matter how they may be distorted by time or misunderstanding. Atlantis was quite real.”

“And you lived there?” Oliver asked. “I mean, I know you’re not from there, but that’s where you ended up?”

“I did.” Artemis nodded. “I discovered
