A young sailor poked his head into the room and held up a phone.

“For you, ma’am,” he said. “Fitz.”

Chris took the phone and followed him into the hall. She watched the sailor open the door to the deck, squinting into the bright light as he left. Holding the phone against her chest as she waited for the door to close behind him, she could feel her heart beating against her hand.

“This is Chris.”

“All of the passengers are okay and the plane is ultimately fine,” Fitz said. “But you were right. We moved the plane into a worse position. The air pocket inside shrank. And—” Fitz cleared his throat. Paused. “We lost one of our divers. The mission was a failure.”

Chris exhaled, unaware she’d been holding her breath. “Damn it,” she muttered.

There, alone, in the quiet hallway, Chris realized how scared she’d been. How much fear was right there, just below the surface. All day, she’d allowed nothing in. Not fear, not hope. Nothing. Any emotion could jeopardize what needed to be done, and that was the only thing that mattered. Getting them home. She’d deal with how she felt about it once they were out of that plane.

But it was undeniable. She was terrified. So just for a minute, she let it in.

She was quiet. So was Fitz. And together, they just breathed, until Chris could think of nothing to say except the truth.

“I would have loved to have been wrong.”
