BUILD A NEURON

The neuron is the worker of the nervous system. This specialized cell transmits nerve impulses that allow the brain and nervous system to communicate. Each part of a neuron’s structure plays a role in the neuron’s overall function. In this activity, you will build a neuron to better understand how it functions.

•Research the neuron’s structure and function. You can look at microscopic slides of real neurons here.

•Draw a design of a model of a neuron. Label each structure in the neuron.

•Gather a variety of materials, such as pipe cleaners, modeling clay, beads, string, paint and brushes, newspaper, Styrofoam balls, or other items.

•Select some materials and build a model neuron. Make sure that you include the dendrites, cell body, nucleus, axon, and axon terminals in the model. What is the function of dendrites? What is the function of axon terminals?

•Use the model to explain the structure and function of a neuron to your friends or classmates. Why is it important to understand the structure and function of a neuron? How did the model help you to explain? In what ways could you improve the neuron model?

To investigate more, add more neurons to your model and demonstrate how a nerve signal passes from one neuron to the next. What happens if something goes wrong with a neuron and its ability to pass a signal?
