Déjà Vu

At nine o’clock at night, Dr. Gallagher arrived at Miranda’s house, relieved to see a light on in her home at the far corner.

“Who is it?” Miranda peered through the peephole.

“Ms. Sheppard. My name is Dr. Gallagher. May I speak with you? I have an important matter to discuss with you.”

“May I see some identification?”

Dr. Gallagher opened up his wallet and held up his license. “Here’s my card, also.” He slid them underneath the door.

“What is this regarding?” Miranda asked through the door.

“Ms. Sheppard. You and I know each other. You are an accountant. You have a sister named Alison and a boyfriend named Steven. You got into a car accident last May, you still get migraines, and you have a heart condition. As of two o’clock this afternoon, you found yourself in your office, and you had no idea how you got there because the last twenty-four hours are a blank.”

What the hell? Who in the world was stalking her? How could he know this? “Go away, or I’ll call the police.” Her voice pitched with fear. “I have a very, very big dog in here. He’s a man-eater. Go away, or he’ll have you as a snack.” She thought those fake recordings of vicious dogs were stupid, but she sure wished she had it at that moment.

“Ms. Sheppard, I know this is disconcerting. I felt the same way this afternoon. I know because the same exact thing happened to me at the same exact time.” He paused and listened. No movement from the other side. “Ms. Sheppard. I normally wouldn’t do this, but this has been a very bizarre afternoon, and I am concerned for your safety. I’m concerned for my safety. Would you please open the door so we can figure this out?”

Miranda unlocked the door and opened it. She stepped aside and motioned for him to enter.

Talk about déjà vu. The woman had a deep-red hair color and pale skin. He knew a girl growing up who would turn crimson at the slightest embarrassment, same hair and skin. He imagined it happened with Ms. Sheppard as well. He followed her to the living room.

“Let me take your coat.”

Dr. Gallagher handed Miranda his coat and baseball cap with the embroidered letters, NESP. She paused as she looked at the cap. “I have the worst case of déjà vu looking at you, like I’m in a fog.” She shook her head. “I normally wouldn’t have even let you in, but I feel like I know you, except I can’t place from where. I should know where I was yesterday and today, but it’s like putting something down and misplacing it for a few minutes until you find it again.”

“I know. That’s been happening to me today, too.”

“Here, have a seat.” She motioned to the couch.

Dr. Gallagher sat down as she sat on the recliner. He had been here before. How? When? Is this what it felt like for his clients to struggle with remembering?

“So, how did you
