Protection and Advocacy funds, supplemented by state funds, continue flowing to anti-treatment Disability Rights attorneys. People with a serious mental illness are being denied necessary care as a result of hurdles put in place by these mental health lawyers working in conjunction with the Bazelon Center and the ACLU. Many of these groups would be forced to stop their anti-treatment advocacy if the federal government and states would stop funding them.

The problems are fixable, and solving them is affordable. However, we need politicians willing to base policy on science rather than on mythology spread by the mental health industry and its advocates. We must target resources on people most likely, not least likely, to become tragedies. Congress and state legislators must be made to understand that throwing money at mental health is not the same as delivering treatment to people with serious mental illness.
