Interlude One

"You tellin' me they keep gold bars in their little private club?" asked Easy as he chewed on a piece of jerky.

He was sitting on a stool at one of the hidden bars on the outside of Big Dave's Town, the kind of place only the locals knew about. Easy had a tattoo of a monarch butterfly on his neck and teeth that looked like a picket fence.

"Stacks of the stuff," said Ollie, grinning.

Ollie wasn't supposed to be anywhere near Big Dave's Town. After betraying the Razor Clan a few years ago, he had a price on his head, but his old mates hadn't turned him in, because he kept bringing profitable jobs their way. As long as he made it more valuable to keep him alive, they would keep their mouths shut.

"Then why didn't you grab some?" said Easy, squinting.

"I would have but a bunch of those preppy society kids showed up. I killed one of them. Shot him right in the chest before he could even say boo."

"I don't know, Ollie. Those societies are bad mojo. Don't they have ghosts guarding their stuff? A succubus or maeho? Don't wanna have my soul sucked out."

"All fucking rumors they spread to keep people scared of them," said Ollie, bouncing on his heels. "And even if they did, I could take care of 'em. But I can't carry all that gold myself. I need a crew of four. Can you talk to Fitch and Lame John?"

"Fitch dead," said Easy, sucking on his teeth. "One of the Drops got 'em. Got the drop on 'em, as you might say." He chuckled. "Poor bastard. He finally got the nerve to ask out Delilah."

"She said yes?" asked Ollie incredulously.

"Oh, hell no. Spit in his face and told him to get out of her bar, but he figured if he could ask her out, he could ask any girl," said Easy.

"Lame John?"

"Yeah, he'd be in. You know we always got your back, especially when you bring jobs like this," said Easy with a wink. "What's the gear?"

Ollie was reaching for his back pocket when his hand tingled. He faked a cough and turned away before his flesh erupted in flame. The blue-orange flicker lasted a few seconds before he managed to squelch it on his pant leg. It'd been happening more often. Magic was spilling out of him and he didn't know why.

"You okay? Not going mad, are ya?"

Ollie spun around. "I'm not mad!"

Easy recoiled, hands held up. His mouth was a smile but his eyes were not. "Hey brother, just a joke. You know we good."

Ollie inhaled deeply, trying to control the rage in his chest. He imagined setting Easy's flesh aflame, burning that stupid tattoo off his neck.

"Here," he said, handing over the list. "I need everything here to pull off the job."

Easy took one long look at Ollie before focusing on the crumpled paper with loose handwriting.

"Whoa, that's a lot of explosives. You sure?"

"I need everything on that list. Everything. No compromises.
