Three weeks after my date with Max, I waited anxiously for Cas to exit the airport. We had been talking daily like old times until I finally convinced her to come visit me. She was still going through it with her husband, and she needed a break. I was happy when she finally gave in and came to see me.

A few months ago, I wouldn’t have thought I would be this excited to see her, but I was. I missed our friendship. Every call we made only multiplied my need to reconnect with my bestie.

I rolled my eyes in annoyance. These damn officers blew their whistle if you stayed two seconds too long. I had already circled the airport twice, waiting for her to exit. I put my car in park as soon as I saw her walk out of the terminal.

“Oh my God,” I screamed like we used to when we were teenagers, happy as hell to see Cas. It had been years since we were last together. She hadn’t changed one bit.

“Friend,” Cas yelled back, reaching for me and giving me a big hug.

We both jumped when the officer blew her whistle for a longer duration of time. I rolled my eyes again.

“Girl, come on before these people try to tow my damn car. They are reckless as hell with those whistles.” I released her from my hug and lifted her luggage, placing it in my trunk.

I walked around to the driver’s side so I could get out of this damn airport. Thank goodness it wasn’t a holiday or it would be even worse.

I slowly eased into the lane so we could head toward my downtown condo.

“How was your flight?” I asked, taking my eyes off the road for a second.

She turned her nose up. “It was good until somebody’s child started yelling, screaming, and acting a fool. Girl, I was ready to give them one of the Unisom’s I had in my purse. My nerves were already bad because you know flying isn’t my thing.”

“I remember, but I’m so glad you came. I have a bunch of things planned for us to do during your visit. I’m so excited.”

She smiled big. “Me too. I needed this getaway. Cedric’s annoying ass is plucking every string of my nerves. How you gone cheat and try to demand someone to talk to you? Men get on my nerves with their old weak ass. Can’t be committed to save their lives. Got me out here looking like a damn dummy. He can’t force me to do shit. He’s lucky I’m even still in the house pretending like this marriage has a chance in hell of surviving. Then, he’s always trying to explain himself, sounding all stupid. He must have me confused for his baby mama. Ehh, I hate even connecting my husband to another woman talking about some “baby mama. Shit, just ghetto.”

I shook my head. Half the time when she vented, I knew she didn’t want me to comment. She needed someone to listen.
