Covered Wagons on the Plains

In May of 1841, the first emigrant train moved westward along the Platte River. It consisted of a few carts, thirteen wagons, and eighty-one people. It was guided by mountain man Tom Fitzpatrick. The path the emigrants took was to be known as the Oregon Trail to the whites, and as the Great Medicine Road to the Indians.

In 1842, a party of 112 persons crossed the Plains. The next year, 1,000 men, women, and children headed west. The Indians thought that this group must be the white’s “big village,” and that no more would follow.

But soon the Indians saw trains of covered wagons roll past in seemingly endless numbers. Raids on the Conestoga wagons - which became fairly frequent after 1851 - did not stop other “ships of the desert” from making the same journey. The emigrant trains continued to roll westward through the 1840s and 1850s.
