By October 1823 James McDonald had relinquished his attempts to carve out a life for himself in Ohio, at least for the time being. He had received news that his brother, Alexander Hamilton, had died, and, feeling few attachments to his life in Cincinnati, he felt compelled to return to the lower Mississippi Valley to take care of his family’s affairs. After “the disposal of some small property” he owned “in that country,” he told John Calhoun, he would pursue a career as a lawyer in “either the State of Mississippi or that of Alabama.”17 James McDonald would indeed wield his legal expertise after arriving in his homelands, but his plans to settle in the U.S. South dramatically diverged once he got there (Fig. 7–1).
