They stopped again that evening. It was the last night they would camp. The women were out with them again. The younger girl stared at Jinady across the camp fire. He ignored her until it was unbearable. Jinady met her eyes.

“How come you won’t talk to us? Weren’t you a prisoner too?”

Her voice stung his cheeks. The rest of the party went silent. Jinady had to clear the lump in his throat before he could answer.

“It didn’t seem right.”

The girl gave a deep sigh. “I don’t want to be in the same situation as the fortress. Hidden away and only allowed to see old men who ‘earned’ the right to marry. I’m sixteen. I want someone near my own age.”

Eban smiled at her. “Is twenty too old?”

Huckly made an outraged sound at Eban, while the girl seemed to appreciate the attention.

Jinady wondered if the two women had been raped by incubi in the mountain. They must have been treated the same way he had. Would it have been harder for them, as women, or easier?

“Cecil,” Figaru said.

The girl looked at Figaru with a tinge of fear in her eyes. Her mother looked up from her food.

“No one will force you to marry or live in seclusion at the settlement.”

Silence followed his words. Jinady watched Cecil. She was fixed on her food. She’d apparently gotten used to the sight of Figaru, but had not been exposed to his demonic voice. After a minute more she dropped her meal and hastened into the wagon. Her mother followed. They closed the door.

Figaru leaned his face down to cover it with his hand.

Jinady felt like he’d been punched in the gut. He spoke too low for Figaru to hear. “Damn it.”

Eban put his hand on top of Jinady’s next to him. The kindness of the gesture was nullified by his smile. He was reveling in Jinady’s response to Figaru.

“There’s a stream through those woods,” Major said to no one in particular. He pointed.

Figaru lifted his face.

“We should restock the water.”

“Me and Jinady will go,” Eban said.

Major’s lifted his brow. “Well—“

“We’re close enough to the border now to be safe, aren’t we?”

“Not entirely,” Figaru said, “but I sense no demons close.”

Eban stood up and tugged Jinady’s arm.

Jinady hesitated. What’s this about?

“Jinady isn’t a soldier,” Figaru said. “You should run this errand with Huckly.”

Jinady looked at Huckly. He was still glowering at Eban for daring to speak to the women.

Jinady rose. “I don’t mind helping. I’d like to wash up, too.”

Eban pulled him hard so there was no more discussion. Jinady was flustered. They went to the back of the wagon to gather the spent bladders.

“I want some alone time with you,” Eban said with a hushed voice. “We probably won’t see each other again in the settlement.”

“Oh, for God’s sake.” He understood the hesitation of Major and Figaru now. They had to suspect his intentions.

“Shh!”

There was a rushing brook past the woods. Jinady dipped his hand. The water was icy. Eban filled water bladders next to him.
