When asked how institutions are selected for inclusion in the Institutional Affinity graph, Liu told us, via e-mail, that they are determined by “what is considered to be important and influential entities according to a composite of various lists compiled such as institutional prescience, gallery activism, etc.” It is unclear what was meant by “gallery activism.” In another correspondence, Liu explained that “affinity means the semantic dimension 0 + dim1 + dim2 +…and the institutions at either end of the scoring range define the dialectic and part meaning to the dimension.” As we had no training in data science we soon realized that to determine whether these graphs were correct they should corroborate what we know to be true.
