To reflect further on the implications of the theistic view just sketched, let us return for a moment to the strange and paradoxical suggestion of Nicholas Humphrey mentioned earlier—the suggestion that consciousness is an “illusion.” The latter term sounds a disparaging or dismissive one. But to his credit, Humphrey ends up acknowledging that if consciousness is in a certain sense an illusion, it is one that is of vital importance to our human lives. For in virtue of being subjects of experience, we humans live in what Humphrey calls soul land:
