Tectiforms and hands

The Vézère and Beune caves are peppered with tectiforms, symbols with a base line supporting what looks like a sun umbrella, drawn in cross section. They have been interpreted as tents or huts but may have been symbols for a place of habitation or, in a broader sense, for the people who inhabited such a place. Bernifal cave, which was found near a tributary of the Beune by Peyrony in 1902, contains a mammoth’s head with a tectiform drawn at an angle on it. Maybe this meant ‘the camp/people of the mammoth’. Rouffignac, that great palace of the mammoths, has thirteen tectiforms that may have conveyed a similar meaning.

Another group of images that may convey coded information about their makers are hands. They appear in the caves of Font de Gaume, Chauvet and Cosquer near Marseilles: El Castillo cave, not far from Altamira, is full of them, and in Bernifal, two left hands were engraved not far in from the entrance. Such images are made either by hands pressed into soft clay; or smeared with paint and pressed onto the cave wall; or by drawing around a hand or pressing a clean hand onto the cave wall and then blowing powder mixed with saliva around it to create a negative impression.
