Chapter 12
A series of emotions played over Bryce’s face. I’d set myself up for this and now faced the fall. My first car had been an old Ford Falcon. 1964. And boy, was she a bitch. Her vinyl seats burned me in the summer and her A/C never worked even though nothing appeared wrong. She stranded me in rain or shine and no matter how much I cajoled, she sat in the driver’s seat and I her willing hostage. The days and weeks after I sold her, I ran the gamut of grief. The same emotions that flicked over Bryce’s face now. He didn’t need a fixer-upper. He needed someone whole. And as much as I wanted that person to be me, the hardest thing I’d ever do was let him go.
His eyes bored into me with a new intensity.
“I am a man of honor. I made a promise to you when I asked you to marry me. And I am going to uphold my promise. I would appreciate if you would do me the same honor.”
“I’m sorry.”
“God dammit!” He slammed his fist on the table making my plate and utensils jump. “Stop. Apologizing.” He left the dining area, escaping to the back deck. Escaping from me.
Too afraid to follow. But more afraid not to, I padded out behind him. His shoulders and back tensed and strained against his t-shirt as he leaned forward on the deck railing. I wrapped my arms around his waist and his muscles spasmed.
“Don’t,” he said, too late.
I squeezed him and tried to convey all my feelings with my hug. “I’m fucked up, Bryce. I don’t want to be, but I am. I’m so fucked up. I’m sorry for being this way. I’m sorry I offended you. I know you don’t want me to apologize, but I’m just a fucking mess.”
He turned around. He didn’t wrap his arms around me this time.
“You can’t keep pushing me away.” He raised my chin and cupped his hand beneath it. “I want this to work. But I need you to work with me, not against me. We are on the same team.” I nodded and he finally hugged me.
“We’ve got a big day tomorrow. Go get some rest.”
“Okay.” I waited and hoped that he could read my mind. I didn’t want to come off more pathetic. Needy. But he calmed me and I knew I wouldn’t sleep that night without some sort of physical truce between us. He let out a deep, shaky breath and leaned down into me. Warm lips touched mine sweetly, for a moment before he pulled back. He was still mad. And I didn’t have enough experience in a normal relationship to know what to do to fix it. So, I squeezed him tight one more time and released him.

Will: Still on for tomorrow
Tempe: as if there had been any doubt
Will: I have plenty
I sent her a picture of me in my wedding suit.
Tempe: Hot. Have one of Bryce too?
Will: Oh God. Incest
Tempe: Not
