CHAPTER 17

Charles Bingley was saddened by the news of Richard Fitzwilliam and Jane Bennet being engaged, but he knew he had no one to blame but himself. Caroline was an anchor around his neck, the curse he had been enduring for most of his life.

“Caroline, we must talk.” Bingley said as he entered the sitting room connected to his sister’s bedchamber.

Foolishly, Miss Bingley believed incorrectly as to his purpose for wishing to speak with her. “Charles, you have come to your senses and decided to aid me in my pursuit of Mr Darcy.”

Frowning, Bingley shook his head. “No, I have made my opinion on that subject well known to you. I have not changed my view.”

“Then what are you going on about? I do not have a good deal of time to waste on your foolishness.” Caroline looked at herself in the full length mirror, primping to make sure that she appeared at her very best.

“I believe it is time for you to journey to Scarborough. Our Aunt Alice will allow you to stay with her for the future months. But I will not be making the journey with you, as I have much to discuss with Darcy.”

Not looking in her brother’s direction, Caroline continued checking her reflection to guarantee her appearance was at the best possible view. “Then it is only proper that I remain with you. Bingley reached forward to take hold of his sister’s arm. “How many times do I have to tell you that you will never become Mrs Darcy, and yet you still refuse to acknowledge the facts. Perhaps, rather than send you to our aunt’s home, I should have you committed to Bedlam.”

“How dare you speak to me in such a manner? Our parents left you the responsibility to see I find a good match. I want Mr Darcy to be my husband. If you are not willing to do your duty to me, you are breaking your promise to our parents. You should be ashamed of neglecting your duty to our family.” Caroline was furious with her brother. All her life, when denied what she wanted, Miss Bingley would have a fit. Usually, her parents would give in to her demands, not wishing to deal with Caroline’s bad behavior.

“My duty was to assist you in finding a good match, which I have tried to do for years. You have turned down three potential husbands because you are insistent on my friend, who refuses to have anything to do with you. Darcy is marrying another, and you must accept that truth. If you are unwilling to accept a good match because of a dream you wish to have fulfilled, you are delusional.”

“Those men were not of the first circles. How could you expect me to accept
