The grey horse had attacked once before, and was to return next day when Thistlewood finally loaded his gun with a slug and shot to kill. Its owner was unknown.
âMonday, 4th January 1768: Chub fishing. Flogged him for neglect & roguery.â
Not much else about Chub, except that in July he was matched with Sally; and in September he suffered a common complaint, the yaws.
Mirtilla, whose husband was driver Johnie at Egypt, was another of Thistlewoodâs favourites. At the beginning of November 1767 he took her: âSup. board and matted bed in Dickâs houseâ and he took her four times more before Christmas 1768. She seems to have been allowed to remain on Egypt until mid-December 1767 when, on the 15th, she was sent home by Mr Hartnole with a note.
â⦠she having been fighting with her husband, driver Johnie, at Egypt last night. Wrote to Mr Hartnole and [put] Mirtilla in the bilboes.â
