“Edgar, I’m surprised to see you here so early.”
“I wasn’t aware that you kept track of my hours, Cornell.”
Dr. Rutherford was too startled by the confronta-tion to object.
Edgar went on. “Ms. Owens and I have discussed the Web site with powers-that-be and decided that it will stay. Any further discussion should be taken to the board.”
Edgar’s broad shoulders seemed to fill the room as he defended the Web site, and Dee’s heart swelled with affection. She knew how difficult it was for Edgar to leave the Web site active—let alone defend it.
“You shouldn’t be taking any chances either, Edgar. Enrollment has hit rock bottom, and that isn’t going to look good when the board reviews your application for Director of Admissions. Don’t get too comfortable in this interim position.”
His application? The board had made the decision to move him to interim director? Why hadn’t Edgar told her he’d put his name in? Dee forced herself to Carol Steward

keep a confident smile on her face, not let Cornell Rutherford see that he’d surprised her with the news.
Edgar was here defending her, and the least she could do was stand by him and present a united front.
“News travels fast in the Kessler family, apparently.”
“Yes,” Cornell responded with an edge of discomfort.
How recent was this news? She recalled Friday night, wanting him to kiss her good-night and the disappointment when he’d insisted they had to keep their distance. This was why. It was beginning to make sense now. But why hadn’t Edgar told her?
Though it wouldn’t have made it much easier to curb her feelings, it would have helped.
Edgar didn’t waver. “It’s difficult to turn down a request to submit an application when it comes from the board of trustees. Still, I’m not concerned about anything they might want to know about me, or what they’ll find. If it’s meant to be, it will happen. David played a very good basketball game Friday night, by the way. It’s too bad you missed it.”
Dr. Rutherford glared at Edgar, then back to Dee.
“I’d be very careful with that ridiculous Web site. If one more allegation shows up about me, I’m going to be filing charges against you two personally!”
Standing ramrod straight, Cornell charged out of the office.
Dee moved to close the door. Then she remembered the gossips who would have a heyday if they were in here together and left it open. Hopefully, the 118

culprits weren’t in yet. “I didn’t like him before, and I like him even less now. That is one troubled man.
Surely he can’t believe he stands a chance of being named the next president of the college. And I hope the board has better sense than to consider him.” She didn’t want to seem possessive by mentioning Edgar’s hopeful job change, but she was sure he’d know how much it hurt her to find out the news from Cornell Rutherford. At least, she hoped he did.
Edgar set his briefcase on the floor next to her desk, removed his overcoat, then pulled the chair closer to her and sat down.
