EIGHTEEN

Lola snatched up the note from Elaine and read it while she took out the ice and a pick. She tossed the paper back onto the countertop. Dinner out tonight. She stabbed at the block of ice until she got three chunks and threw them into a tall glass. Next came lemon and a long pour of gin.

“Rot gut,” said Aubrey.

Lola pressed her lips together, a wave of goose pimples running along her skin, herald to his return. She felt something relax deep within her, and frowned.

“Only if it’s cheap.” Lola took a long swallow of her drink, then placed the sweating glass to her neck. “What’d you uncover?”

“Stasha Chu is in debt for more than she’s made of, for one thing.”

“Tell me something. How do you measure that?”

“Ether?”

“Whatever a Ghost is made of. It’s not as though you can be weighed, right?”

“It’s a simple spell. I imagine every Conjuration student is taught it in their first term.”

Lola grunted.

“Apparently, Serene negotiated the terms of repayment with Kam on her own. Not even her grandmother had the final say.”

“You believe that?”

“Can’t see a reason the Ghost I spoke with would lie.”

Lola collapsed onto her sofa. She downed the rest of her drink, kept hold of the icy glass. Elaine had left the draperies open, as Lola preferred. Here the sun was still visible on the distant horizon. Sunset painted the sky in vivid pinks and orange, turning the water beneath dark grey in contrast. Lola closed her eyes and leaned back.

“What’s your take on Stasha? She likely to do it all over again?” She pressed her cold fingertips against her eyelids.

“Absolutely. They’ll both be back in this exact same place in another six months, nine tops.”

“You sound awfully certain.”

“She mistakes control for power.”

Lola couldn’t argue with the disdain in Aubrey’s voice.

She opened her eyes, sat up, and watched the sun disappear for another night. When the glass was no longer cool to the touch, she took it to the kitchen, and went to change.
