Laxus could feel Sam’s nervousness practically radiating off him. They’d ordered their food, and now they both sat silently. The silence was more noticeable since they were alone in one of the back rooms.

“Everything all right?” Laxus asked.

Sam nodded. “Yeah.”

“I have to see patients tomorrow, and then I’ll have surgery early the next morning.”

Another nod. “What should I do?”

“Whatever you want. I’ll come to work in the larger speeder, but there are a couple of smaller ones in the bay out back.”

“Yeah, I saw those.”

“You can use one of them to explore or come to the plaza or hospital. Go for a run or work out in the gym. Whatever you want.”

Sam folded his hands in his lap. “You’re going to trust me completely? Without a tracker or anything?”

Laxus rested his arms on the table and leaned forward. “Yes. Remember what happens if you violate the contract with me?”

“The prison forfeits its payment unless they make every effort to recapture me. And then I have to work my term off in the mines on Vaharis 6 unless you give me a second chance.”

Laxus nodded slowly. “Exactly. No one in his right mind would run.”

“I get that…” He trailed off, almost as if he didn’t want to say or ask what was on his mind.

“So what is it you don’t get? How I can trust a man I just met? You put your trust in me when you signed.”

“But I was getting out of prison. You couldn’t be completely sure what you were getting. You still don’t really know.”

“Then take it as a compliment that I’m choosing to trust you.”

Sam looked uncertain as salads were set in front of them. Laxus smiled at the waiter and took up his fork. When they were alone again, he reached across the table to touch Sam’s hand. “Look, I can’t help if I don’t know what you’re thinking and feeling.” He drew his hand back and began eating.

Sam tasted the dressing, which they’d been warned would be extremely spicy, and then he poured a generous amount onto his salad. “Hard to say right now.”

“Are you only letting me touch you because you have to? You seem to enjoy it.”

A slight blush touched his cheeks. “You’ll report me if I don’t obey, won’t you?”

“I’m within my rights to do so.”

Sam studied him as he chewed. After swallowing, he said, “That’s not an answer.”

Laxus had two choices. He could set Sam’s mind at ease by telling him he had no intention of reporting him because he couldn’t bear the thought of the prison getting Sam in its clutches again, or he could stake his claim and tell Sam he was never going to let him go. It might not be love, but nothing had ever felt as good as making Sam come. But he couldn’t say any of those things. Either declaration seemed too absolute. He didn’t want Sam to deny him, but he also didn’t want a defeated mate giving in to him—he wanted Sam to care for him, to love him one day.
