CHAPTER TWENTY

ANSEL

Ansel blinked, eyes still getting used to the sudden gloom.

“Is everyone in?” he asked. He’d only had time to get his tools, but he thought he saw both Ryker and Xavier on the right of the hatch when it slammed shut.

And what had been up with that? Why had the door suddenly decided to follow his commands, when he hadn’t even had the time to locate the error in the code he’d been feeding it?

“Yes. But a little warning would have been nice,” Xavier complained with a groan.

“I agree,” Ansel replied, as he turned around to glare at Maia. He could just about make out her outline, but it was too dark for him to see the expression on her face. Had it been his imagination, or had he caught a glimpse of her touching the security panel just now? “But I was also caught by surprise when the mechanism triggered the entrance to close. I was working on it, but I’m pretty sure I hadn’t yet worked out the error in its code.”

He narrowed his eyes, trying to squint through the darkness. He was no expert in body language… but the glimpse he’d had and something about the way Maia was holding herself now made him feel like she’d had something to do with it.

But it had all happened in the blink of an eye. Surely she couldn’t have been responsible, even if she was much better at programming than he was? It didn’t make any sense for her to save them, not if she’d been trying to destroy them all when she’d lured Hades into the explosion.

And yet… what other explanation could there be?

“Maybe you did, but the tech was just slow to respond,” Ryker said, sounding a little further away than where Ansel had last seen him. He seemed to be fumbling around near the wall. A moment later, a click sounded, and white light suddenly flooded the entire space, revealing the interior of the ship. “This place looks ancient, after all,” he finished.

“Possibly,” Ansel replied, finally looking away from Maia to take in their surroundings.

He’d already gotten a sense of how old the ship was from its tech, but seeing was believing. And this place really looked like it belonged in a museum.

Maia sucked in a deep breath, drawing his attention to her once more. She was gaping at the interior of the ship as if she were seeing a ghost. Not just that… Ansel frowned, not quite sure he was reading her right. Because the expression on her face seemed to convey… not fascination or surprise… but sadness and longing.

What in blazing hells was up with her?

“This ship probably crashed close to five hundred years ago,” Xavier said, breaking the silence. He didn’t seem fazed by the bits of tentacle monster that was still wrapped around his body.

Ryker went over to help him pull its jagged appendages off, causing Xavier to hiss.

“Did it actually manage to get through the material?” Ansel asked in disbelief. A couple of them had gotten really close to him, but none had yet punctured his suit.
