Chapter

Ten

Anna woke the second morning in a row to the man of her dreams cuddled close. His gorgeous eyes blinked open. Immediately, those eyes said to her, ‘you will get lost in a sea of blue.’ Luckily she was already lying down, or she would’ve swooned.

Peace and light from above had wrapped around them last night. She’d been surprised that he’d drifted off to sleep so quickly. She had a million more questions for him, but that wasn’t what he’d needed last night.

Would she ever know the truth about him? Maybe it didn’t matter. She didn’t have the skills to protect him from whoever he was running from, but she could love him. What mattered most was that he felt God’s love and his soul was healed. She feared that her dreams of being with him mind, body, and soul would never happen.

They stared at each other for a heart-stopping moment. Would he pull away like last night? Would he lean in and kiss her? She didn’t favor a first kiss with Quaid sporting morning breath, but a sweet, simple touching of their lips would be beautiful.

“Thank you,” he whispered, obviously not wanting to set off the cameras.

“For?”

“Praying for me and holding me.”

“It was a joy,” she whispered back.

He smiled slightly, and she eased closer, but he gently disentangled her and helped her up. “Let’s get moving. Day four is a big one.”

“Is it now?” Anna fought her disappointment. She wanted day four to be the day they kissed. Though finding all the caves was high on her priority list, as soon as they did, she feared he would run. She might never see him again.

“Definitely.” He grinned and, for the moment, everything was right in her world.

They set about getting cleaned up, dressed, eating a quick breakfast, and then they were pushing through a bunch of branches and overgrowth at the cave entrance that she hadn’t noticed last night and on their way up another switchback path. Some of the trails appeared well-used, but this one was little more than a thin goat’s path. They even saw a few long-horned mountain goats. She feared he was pushing to find all the caves so he could disappear.

The day was overcast, making the forest and towering mountains feel mystical, like something off a Lord of the Rings movie. She saw Quaid checking their surroundings constantly and followed his lead, looking for ugly monsters from the movie, or worse, those two men they’d passed on the trail. Thankfully, it was just her and Quaid. They talked and teased and, in her mind, grew closer emotionally. Would it matter in the end? She had to fight the despair of knowing Quaid would disappear from her life soon.

A light rain started after they ate a simple lunch. They hadn’t found a cave, and they hadn’t heard or seen any helicopters. Four more caves to go and three more days. Would they find the caves and allow her to help more children? Hopefully. It felt like they’d covered a thousand miles and had a million more to go.
