Carrying out testing

Have you created your dev, test, and production environments? If you have not, this is where you should stop and do this. Do not move on without having these environments in place. These environments help you mitigate errors, especially when you're performing custom development. They also help with maintenance and testing product updates, as well as other updates you may have based on third-party solutions.

Stress and performance testing the environment

Performance and stress testing is a great way to figure out if your farm is suitable for the user community you're building it for. Visual Studio Enterprise Edition is the ultimate product for load testing SharePoint sites. Unfortunately, this feature will be deprecated but there is a new online version of the product that we will talk about in Chapter 9, Managing Performance and Troubleshooting. Within this product, there are two features called Web Performance and Load Testing Tools that can be installed using the Visual Studio Installer. You can choose from cloud-based testing to on-premises load testing. I have used this tool in the past for a couple of my clients that wanted to perform reporting before going live and the results were great. This process also performance tests your servers and you will get performance reports from the servers as part of the testing process. If you need a good tool to test your resources and ramp up user stress against the environment, this is the tool to use. Unfortunately, we will not go into this testing in-depth as this would take a whole chapter, but if you are interested in performing load tests on your environment, please take a look at the following link, which tells you how to set up and use the product: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/test/quickstart-create-a-load-test-project?view=vs-2017.
