As he began to build his team for The Dark Crystal, Jim received an intriguing gift: an exquisite Japanese-style marionette made by a young artist, Wendy Midener. Jim immediately saw the potential in combining her talent for sculpting dolls with Froud’s designs and, after meeting in New York, Midener signed on. Jim headed back to London with his daughter Cheryl only to be delayed by a blizzard. Unable to depart, the two holed up at an airport hotel. As Cheryl remembered, “The world appeared to be one enormous blank white slate. Before cell phones and laptop computers, being stranded by a snowstorm meant quiet time, time to imagine new worlds and their inhabitants.” Jim filled pages with musings and ideas, outlining The Dark Crystal.
