THE PURPOSE OF the LEAP tools we have covered thus far (listening, empathizing, delaying, and using the three As) is to reduce the temperature of the argument, lower defenses, and transform an adversarial relationship into an alliance. The alliance at this point is founded on the other person having an experience of respect, trust that his arguments will be carefully listened to without argument, and a feeling of kinship with you at the level of emotional experience (âHe understands how I feelâ). He also feels more in control and, consequently, less like he has to strong-arm you. Now the ground is fertile for finding areas of agreement and ultimately working together, as partners, to cultivate that common ground to yield a solution that addresses your shared interests.
