David was often portrayed playing the harp in Psalters. This example from the fourteenth-century Luttrell Psalter also shows an ape confiding with an owl (upper left).
Once it had acquired a lay as well as a religious readership, the Psalter was the book with which many people learned to read. Most Psalters for church use are relatively plain, and were well used and so have survived poorly. Psalters for private lay use saw much less practical use and were often profusely illustrated. The Psalter commissioned by Sir Geoffrey Luttrell in the second quarter of the fourteenth century is especially richly illustrated, with marginal scenes including contemporary rural life (Luttrell had a large estate) and grotesques, imagined hybrid creatures that can be in turn hideous or just humorous. The book was produced in Lincolnshire and is the work of a single scribe and five artists.
