“Dinner was wonderful.”

Nick’s eyes met Myla’s across the expanse of the Queen Anne dining table. He liked this. He liked having Lydia and the children here to share a big Christmas dinner. He didn’t know when exactly he’d started liking it, but his mood was more in line with the holiday spirit because of Myla and her two children. Now if he could just convince her to stay here, with him.

“Thank you,” Myla said in a hushed tone. Her mind kept going back to what Nick had said in the kitchen. He was changing. She could tell that. He’d even said grace before he carved the turkey for dinner. Still, she was reluctant to trust him completely. Yet when she sat here, looking at him, exchanging warm smiles at some cute comment from one of the children or just noticing how handsome he looked in his sweater and casual slacks, she knew it wouldn’t take much for her to fall for him. Oh, this was so hard!

Lydia cleared her throat loudly, bringing Myla’s head up. “And the dressing…I love oyster dressing, don’t you, Nick?”

“Yes, love it.”

“Can I have a piece of pecan pie?” Patrick asked.

“You’ve barely touched your meal,” Myla said, her eyes still on the man at the head of the table. “Considering we had a light breakfast, I’d say you’d better eat as much as you can.”

“I did eat,” Patrick whined. “I’m ready for pie.”

“In a few minutes, Patrick.”

Jesse tried. “I’m ready for pie, too, Mama.”

Myla’s gaze shifted from one child to the other. She couldn’t help but smile. Jesse was almost completely well from her cold, and her children were well fed and warm. In many ways, this Christmas had been one of their best together. “Oh, all right I guess you can have dessert now.” Looking down the table, she saw Nick’s grinning expression. “I suppose you want some pie, too?”

“Yes, Mom,” he said, bursting out in laughter, then quickly clearing his throat to look serious. “If that’s all right with you?”

Myla rose to get the requested goodies. “Of course. I didn’t bake it for it to just sit there looking pretty.”

After the children hopped up to follow their mother, Lydia gave her brother a curious look. “What’s going on?”

“Nothing. Everything’s great.” He changed the subject. “Remember when you mentioned taking the children to see the Christmas lights at the American Rose Center?” At her confused nod, he added, “I think tonight would be a perfect time.”

“What are you up to, big brother?”

He leaned forward with a conspiring look. “I want to give Myla her Christmas present, is all. Oh, and take Shredder with you. I don’t want any children, dogs, cats, old girlfriends, or sisters around when I do it.”
