Epilogue

“Quite a crowd today,” Nick said, his arm wrapped around his wife’s slender waist.

“Yes, but we expected that with the holidays so near.” Leaning against him, Myla watched as people came and went, Christmas packages tucked underneath their arms, the smell of fresh-baked bread and homemade vegetable soup wafting around them.

“Well, you should be proud. I am.” Nick kissed the top of her head, then patted the soft rounding bulge just beginning to show in her stomach. “We have a lot to be thankful for this Christmas.”

“Uh-huh.” Myla grimaced. “If I can just get through morning sickness.”

“Feel bad?”

“No, I feel marvelous, happy and in the Christmas spirit. I can handle a little nausea.”

“Yeah, I believe you can handle just about anything. Guess that’s why I love you so much.” He gave her another peck on the cheek, then let her go. “I’ve got to get moving. The next group of volunteers is waiting for me to teach them how to build houses. Come on, walk me to the truck.”

Myla followed him through the glass double doors of the modest brick building, squinting at the noonday sun running down Line Avenue. After eight months of marriage, she was still very much in love.

And amazed at how blessed her life was now. She’d become partners with Grant, her soon-to-be brother-in-law. Then, keeping that partnership intact, and with Nick’s encouragement, she’d opened up this place.

Bread of Life was more than a restaurant, though. It was a unique place where people who didn’t have money for food could eat a good hot meal, along with some of the most influential people in the city, who paid donations to keep the nonprofit restaurant open. So far, the response had been tremendous.

Homeless people found hope here, in the form of job offers or assistance with education, or medical needs.

Nick liked to tell people it offered more than a meal, it offered solutions. And he was now a vital part of those solutions, a devout advocate for homeless rights and ways of getting people off the streets and back to productive lives.

He and Myla had even toned down their own lives, remodeling the mansion to make it more childproof and homey, and putting a needy family in the house he’d originally donated for Myla.

Reaching his used work truck where Jessica and Patrick sat waiting, Nick turned now, pulling Myla into the circle of his arms. “Don’t work too hard, Mrs. Rudolph. We’ve got a lot to celebrate this year.”

Myla nuzzled his neck, savoring the warmth and security he always offered. “Yes, we certainly do.”

“Hey, Mama,” Patrick called through the partially open window, “are you sure you’re gonna be done here by Christmas?”

“Of course she will,” Jessica replied in her proper, big-sister tone. “She’s just doing her job first.”

Giving her children that endearing look Nick loved so much, Myla nodded to her family. “I promise, I’ll be home for Christmas.”

Nick looked up to the shimmering winter sky, then smiled at his wife. “This year, we’ll all be home for Christmas.
