Chapter 10

Leah

Waiting to talk to Karen the next day was an exercise in patience. I had no idea how she’d react to me inserting myself into her situation. If she’d feel supported or be offended. I warred with myself all day, questioning whether I was doing the right thing.

I’d been down this road before and had failed tremendously. And if I failed again, the consequences would affect not only the two of us, but possibly this business I shared with Kylie as well. What if her husband got wind that I was onto him? He could end our rental contract and toss us out. I owed it to Kylie to not put our careers in jeopardy.

But even worse, and this was my greater fear, what if he took that anger out on Karen?

Still, I couldn’t stand by and choose to take no action. Doing so made me as much to blame as him in my mind.

So when she walked into class, her normal outfit of long sleeves and pants took on new meaning for me. “What’s this?” She tilted her head to the side, a little smile of curiosity peeping out.

“It’s nothing much. Just a note because I was thinking of you.” I offered her a genuine smile, hiding my nerves.

“That’s very sweet, Leah.” She flipped the note card over as if to open it.

“Please wait until you are alone.” I hurried to stop her from possibly embarrassing us both. “I got really vulnerable with my note, and I’m a little shy about that.”

She tapped it against her palm, eyeing me curiously. “Okay. Well thank you, I guess?”

I laughed, feeling all kinds of awkward, willing her to let me own the uncomfortable silence that fell between us.

“I just appreciate you and wanted to share why. That’s all.”

“Hey, Leah,” Kylie called from the front room. “Can you come up here for a minute?”

Karen looked toward the front before shifting her attention back to me. “I was hoping you’d fill me in on seeing you and Mike Harrison at dinner the other night, but I guess this isn’t a good time to talk.”

I blushed to the roots of my hair, my entire
