Chapter 10: November 8

“How did your weekend with Drake go?” Tracy stepped back from the door to let Elaina in.

Tracy’s brother had offered to take the three children with him and his family on a two-week trip to Disney Land, and the kids were so excited at the prospect, she couldn’t turn it down. After kissing her children goodbye on Saturday, Tracy had spent the whole week doing as much as she could at the restaurant.

Tracy wasn’t a person who liked to be idle, and the idea of being home by herself for the week leading up to Elaina’s stay didn’t sit well with her. When she wasn’t at the restaurant, Tracy spent most of her free time at the hospital with Porter. Now that her weekend with Elaina was underway, Tracy was grateful for the company.

“It was good,” Elaina stated as she followed Tracy into the living room, “he was a lot of fun to hang out with. I had some memory flashes a few times, but nothing definitive.”

Tracy nodded and hid her disappointment. She’d hoped that spending the weekend alone with Drake would have helped the woman’s memory.

Oh well, she thought, that doesn’t mean she won’t have a breakthrough while she’s with me.

“I’ve never done this before,” Tracy offered sheepishly, “but, um, what would you like to do first?”

Elaina smiled at the way Tracy ran her hand through her hair. She’d noticed over the last several weeks that the blonde woman only did so when she was nervous, and Elaina found it quite endearing.

“Drake started with a tour of the house, maybe we can start with that?” she suggested.

Tracy chuckled and held out her hand to the redhead. Elaina took the offered hand and allowed the woman to lead the way.

“As you have already seen, this is the living room,” Tracy explained, “Jaycen spends a lot of time in here with Tesla. It’s also where we watch movies as a family.”

Elaina looked around the room. She noticed the many framed photos of Tracy and Jaycen’s children proudly displayed on the walls, interspersed here and there with photos of the couple and a few family portraits.

There were a few toys in a small basket next to the far end of the couch, and a long wooden coat rack filled with small jackets and coats was mounted to the wall next to the window.

As Tracy led her into the hallway, Elaina made sure to study each of the pictures that she found. She’d seen a few photos hung sporadically throughout Drake and Tamryn’s house, but here, it seemed that every picture snapped found its way onto a wall. An image at the foot of the staircase, hung well out of the reach of the children, caught her attention.

The photo was of a much younger Jaycen and Tracy at what appeared to be a high school football game. The pair were standing on the sidelines, facing each other, with Jaycen’s arms around Tracy’s shoulders. Tracy’s hands were resting on Jaycen’s hips, and the couple’s foreheads rested against one another.
