Chapter Seven

Morgan

As a child, when I was frustrated, upset, or overlooked, I would slam the doors of my room, the front door, and even the back door to command attention. I’d wait for my parents to get tired of me slamming them and then they’d approach me, and we’d fix things. I can’t do that with Hensley, but I’m mad enough, and that’s exactly what I want to do.

Spending the day with his mother was terrible. She’s cold, mean, and clearly believes humans are the scourge of the planet. How am I supposed to believe that he won’t have a similar feeling? That he won’t eventually grow to believe the same thing when we’re around mixed company? Dragon society, huh.

The large front door holds still as I stomp upstairs. My plan is to get my things and leave before it gets harder. It was fun while it lasted. But, after this afternoon, if those women are any indication of what Hensley is looking for, I’m the farthest from being an aimed target. I would never demean and belittle another woman the way they did.

His mother … She’s a completely different thing altogether. Having to deal with her seems like more of a headache than this whole relationship might be worth, and he knew that. Everyone knows their parents to a degree. He knew me being here was going to be an issue, and if Hensley wasn’t going to commit to being by my side when dealing with his mother, he might as well have left me with Aryan and Winnie.

Storming around my room, I gather my clothes, repacking things I just unpacked twenty-four hours ago. Before my heavy door can catch against the hinges, it stops midway. Looking over my shoulder, I tuck my disheveled hair behind my ear, which gives me the space to see Hensley standing in the doorway.

Why does he have to be so sexy? Even when I’m angry, he turns me on.

He crosses his arms over his chest and props himself against the door frame. He’s as cool as a cucumber, and my pale skin feels as though it’s on fire. His eyes are on me as I move through my chambers, making sure I haven’t left anything behind. I even kick off my shoes and change into a more suitable choice so that my feet won’t hurt as I travel back home—if that’s even what I can call it.

If I had to count on my fingers the amount of times I’d had to start over, I’d run out of fingers. Shame and embarrassment are the only things on my mind. I’ll have to return to Winnie and explain my failure. Even though she won’t kick me out, she’ll have that pitiful look on her face, and she’ll feel bad. I don’t want that. My fingers are wrapped tightly around my roll away suitcase, ready to depart. I’ll just call an Uber to take me to the airport. I’ve got enough money for a plane ticket.
