As we began to see in chapter 4, we don’t really understand the concept of stewardship. But it’s not just our money that is his, or even our possessions: we are his! Everything else is consequential or, to spell it out, everything I own is his because I am his. Paul tells us clearly that we have been bought at a price (1 Corinthians 6:19 – 20). That means that we are no longer our own; I no longer belong to me!

One of the great theological terms of the New Testament is the word “redemption.” But in the first-century world in which the New Testament was written, it was an everyday, market-place term rather than a religious one. Its essential meaning was one of release through payment. So a slave would be redeemed, because a price was paid to secure his or her freedom. The Bible shows, and our experience confirms, that we are slaves of sin. Sin holds us in its vice-like grip, and we are helpless. But Christ died to secure our freedom. By his death, he paid the price of our sin and broke its hold over us. So now we are no longer slaves, no longer enthralled, no longer trapped. But this freedom is not ours to do with as we please — a freedom typified by a whimsical obedience. It is a freedom to serve the God who freed us!

That is why everything we own is his, and he calls us to offer it to him freely, in a response of thankful and delighted worship.
