• If I did not achieve this goal, how would I feel?
• What things am I prepared to put aside to make this goal happen?
As I was writing this I Was Busy, Now I’m NotTM book and thought about answering these questions about relevance, I realized writing the book is 10 out of 10 for me. I would be terribly disappointed if I did not write the book because God has given me important keys to being a good steward with time that are working in my life and I know those can help many other people. Failing to achieve my goal of writing this book would actually fail to carry out an important desire in my heart that God put there.
The first “T” in SMARTT stands for Time-Framed or Time-Sensitive. “Framed” means you have a start date and finish date, framing your goal. Your dates need to be realistic and achievable. Depending on the length of the book, saying “I am going to write a book and have it finished next week” would be completely unrealistic and unachievable for most people. However, there are a few people who could realistically achieve this goal with enough motivation.
Continuing with the example of writing your book, instead of saying “I am going to write a book within a year,” you are more likely to achieve this goal if you say, “Starting on June 1st, I will begin writing a book and have that ready to go to the printer by December 15th.” Now you have a start date and a finish date.
The second “T” in SMARTT stands for Trackable. This is very helpful because it gives you a chance to monitor your progress and put up little sign posts along the way so you can see how you are tracking in terms of achieving success. If for some reason you are falling short or some unexpected things come up, you can revise your mini time table so that you can still meet your end time frame.
The other benefit of this is that having little wins along the way helps you stay a lot more motivated to keep going and pressing on to set higher goals. Again using the example of writing a 12 chapter book by December 15th, let us break that down. You might say, “I am going to write one chapter every two weeks, writing 500 words per day, five days per week. Then you have little sign posts, little objectives, to meet along the way.
Most people tend to be aware of SMARTT goals at some level, but often they are unaware of what really gives them horsepower and what really lifts them off the page to become reality. They also are not aware of what things can block the outworking of the goals.
What Gives SMARTT Goals Horsepower?
“People often complain about the lack of time, when the lack of direction is the real problem.”
