Chapter Twenty-Four

Angry tears were flowing down Nora’s cheeks, hitting the hay bale she was sitting on. In her anger she had run to the back of the stable and climbed the gnarly ladder up to the hay loft. She must have climbed it on raging adrenaline because now her body was hurting as bad as her heart and she had no idea how she was going to get down again.

“Serves them damn right,” crossing her arms, “if I never see them again.” She sighed. If she died up on the hayloft, it would probably just prove them right. That she couldn’t take care of herself. That she needed them taking care of her. Nora didn’t need them, she wasn’t as weak and helpless as they thought.

She clenched her fists and worked against the wish to hit her own chest in anger. More tears pressed themselves out. Oh, if I could just stop crying. When you wanted to be angry it was embarrassing to cry instead. She lifted her foot to kick the wall but lost her balance and fell backwards with a yelp instead.

Not a moment later somebody was climbing the ladder and Martha peeked her head over the edge.

“So, this is where you’re hiding.” She got up and sat next to Nora.

“I’m not hiding,” Nora said. “I want to be alone. Please leave.”

“Can we talk?” Martha reached out but Nora moved out of her reach. “Please, I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“You embarrassed me.” Nora kept her gaze on the horizon. She couldn’t look at Martha right now. “All my life I thought you were the one who treated me like normal. The one who didn’t just see somebody sickly and useless.” Goodness, she was going to cry again. “Katherine likes me! For me! She wants to kiss me and hold me and she listens to me.”

Martha didn’t answer. Nora didn’t look at her but when Martha had continued being silent for quite a while, Nora glanced at her. Her sister was biting her lip as if there was something she wanted to say but knew she shouldn’t. She was looking at the horizon, not at Nora.

“What?” Nora’s heart was pounding again. So hard it hurt. Please don’t say it, Martha, don’t say it, please, I trust you.

“Well.” Martha talked slowly. “Why does she like you?”

Nora felt like she had been slapped. She brought her hand up to her chest. In one way she was surprised she was still breathing, that Martha’s cruel words hadn’t killed her right then and there.

“I know it sounds harsh, but Nora.” Martha reached for her and Nora didn’t move away. There was no point. She couldn’t feel Martha’s hand on her shoulder anyway. She didn’t think she would be able to feel anything ever again. “Nora, my darling, she’s a lady of society. Older than you. More experienced than you. She comes from a nice family and goes to parties where they serve champagne. She is served dinner every night in that beautiful dining room.
