Lao Lao

Vientiane, Laos

A twelve hour bus ride is a good time for whisky.

He wanted whisky,

I wanted whisky.

Our girlfriends were along for the ride.

We were stopped in Laos, at a bus stop full of dust and dead chickens. Lukewarm meats spun slowly over orange coals while lazy fans with fly swatter arms waved the warm air like slow hands.

Everything is better with hot sauce.

The country is named Laos,

pronounced Lao

and if you say it twice:

Lao Lao,

it refers to clear, homemade moonshine

in used Pepsi bottles.

I stepped off the bus and I wanted this liquid.

There were two passengers haunting this market

stall-by-stall.

An Estonian man and his Polish girlfriend.

He wanted whisky for the road,

she wanted peace.

Somehow they didn’t know the magic words:

Lao Lao.

I don’t know what the fuck he was saying

but the little meat-selling ladies weren’t understanding.
