Never Make the First Move
Aaaaaaaah! Christian Slade, asking me to dance?!
âSure,â I say, taking his hand.
Thereâs a small square in the garden serving as a dance floor, and some other couples are already swaying in the middle. Christian escorts me to the center, and we start swirling in time with the music. With a hand on my lower back and the other holding mine, he leads me like a professional.
âYouâre an impressive dancer,â I say.
âYou seem surprised.â
âNot many men can waltz this gracefully, not in this century at least.â
He chuckles. âComes with the job, I guess.â
âOf being an actor?â
âYeah, sooner or later we all have to star in a costume movie with a ball, and the dance-like-a-gentleman training becomes mandatory.â
âWhat movie?â
Christian raises a brow. âNot a fan, I take it?â
I blush. âNo, itâs not that. But Iâm not a stalker either. Youâve been in so many movies⦠I donât remember them all.â
âWhich ones have you seen, then?â
âAh, well. Last yearâs sci-fi flick⦠mmm⦠Dancing in the Rain, of course. See, thatâs another one you had to waltz in.â
âIndeed. Thatâs my excuse for being a good dancerâwhatâs yours?â
âSeveral years of ballet with some ballroom dancing on the side.â
âBrilliant.â
âYour real-life British accent sounds weird.â
Christian flashes me another of his million-dollar smiles. âYou donât like it?â
âNo, I do. Itâs just that on TV, you usually speak American. Itâs fascinating how you can sound totally natural with both accents.â
Christian chuckles. âThatâs diction training for you. And having an American mum helped too.â He winks.
Is he flirting? Wow, itâs so weird to dance with a man Iâve only seen on TV whoâs so incredibly gorgeous. Mr. Slade here looks like a marble statue, and Iâm pretty sure his skin is smoother than mine. Not to mention, Christian has been named âSexiest Man Aliveâ three years in a row, as well as Hollywoodâs most wanted bachelor. This whole experience is surreal.
But for all his good looks and A-list status, Iâm still at ease talking to him. And, weirdly enough, I donât want to rip his clothes off and haul him off to my hotel room. Chatting with him feels more like talking to an old friend.
âYou have an odd expression,â Christian says, interrupting my musings.
âItâs just that youâre so normal.â That came out wrong. He raises his brows and I hurry to explain better. âI thought Iâd be completely star-struck by you. But youâre just a regular human being.â
Christian is silent for a split second, making me worry I mightâve offended him. But then he throws back his head, roaring with laughter.
My cheeks heat up. âDid I say something wrong?â
âNo,â Christian says, still chuckling. âI wish I met more people like you.â
The song changes and we pause for a second.
âAnother round?â Christian asks.
âSure,â I say, and let him pirouette me around.
After some more dancing, I ask, âDo people treat you very differently?â
âYouâve no idea. Feeling normal is a welcome novelty.â
âArenât actors supposed to have these huge egos? You know, always needing to be the center of attention.
