On the deck, Adam, Christophe, and Steve sat listening to R&B. Brennan slipped through the sliding door onto the deck and shut it. He handed a frosty green bottle to each man. “Friends, drink up. There’s plenty more where that came from.”

Chuckling, Steven twisted the cap off the bottle and tossed the cap in the trash near the grill. “Speaking of drinking up, make sure you get plenty of sleep. Once that baby gets here, that will be a lost cause. If you’re lucky, you’ll sleep when the baby sleeps. It’s not your life anymore.”

Grunting, Brennan admitted, “Yeah. I’ve been thinking about that. I’m not sure how that’s going to go.”

Steve rose from his chair and patted his brother-in-law on the back. “Liz and I will be here to help you.”

Adam tossed the bottle cap in the air and caught it. “Family will make everything easier.”

“Hey, Brennan, what are the ladies up to?” Steve stretched out on the patio lounger.

“Liz just started the first game.” Brennan said, lifting the top of the grill and reaching for a fork. “I think they’ve got about six to eight lined up to play. It’ll go on for hours.”

Steve lifted the longneck bottle to his lips. “Good. What time does the Pistons game start?”

Studying his watch, Brennan answered, placing chicken and steaks in a blue roaster pan. “In about thirty minutes. Let me get this meat inside and then we can head to the family room.”

“Cool!” Adam said. “They’ve been hot all season.”

“They have. The family room is all set up. I’ve got a new HD 50-inch flat screen television. Man, you get every detail on that baby.”

This isn’t so bad, Adam thought, allowing the chatter around him to go unnoticed. When Wynn had asked him to come along, his first instinct had been to say no. But now that he was here, he was having an okay time. Swapping stories with the guys and drinking beer worked for him. It was good to see people in a nonwork environment having a good time. Adam leaned back in the chair with his beer, enjoying the gentle breeze floating around him.

“So what about you, Adam?” Steve broke into Adam’s introspection.

“What?” He swung one leg over the arm of the chair and swung it back and forth.

“You’ve been with Wynn awhile. What’s up with that?” Brennan closed the top of the grill. “Are you two getting serious?”

Not sure if he liked the direction this conversation was taking, Adam shrugged. “It’s all good.”

“But is it better than good?” Christophe asked.

Although Adam knew Christophe had been listening to their conversation with rapt attention, he didn’t expect the Frenchman to ask such a personal question. Adam smiled, thinking of all the time he’d recently spent with Wynn. No matter how much they were together, he wanted more. He loved being with Wynn, her sons, and even Wynn’s mother, Peg. Although he preferred being around Mrs. Evans in very small doses. “Yeah. It is.”

Christophe took a swig from his bottle and gazed directly at Adam.
