Even in my rotation of female-led, female-centered, female-focused shows, heroines were given voice, life, and low-cut tank tops by men who have never heard a woman’s thoughts. Mondays were for Aaron Spelling’s Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place, and David E. Kelley’s Ally McBeal. Tuesdays for Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Kevin Williamson’s Dawson’s Creek and J. J. Abrams’s Felicity. (Later, Sundays were for J. J. Abrams’s Alias.) Wednesdays were for rest. Must-see TV was Thursdays with David Crane and Marta Kauffman’s Friends and Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld’s Seinfeld and Michael Crichton’s ER. Saturday night was reserved for Lorne Michaels’s Saturday Night Live and Sunday for Darren Star’s Sex and the City. All the women—however strong, however leading—were hot, tiny, youthful, feminine, next to naked, and the badass ones were a lot like men in women’s bodies.7
