Robert clicked the gas pump handle down so that it pumped without him holding it. As it poured gas into the tank, he walked around his Toyota, disappointed. He ran his finger along where the bullet had hit the hood. It appeared to have made impact, then ricocheted off somewhere. The front bumper suffered some scruffs and a few small dents. The driver’s side had some light scratches from the chain link fence, but also a heavy dent in the fender – right below the gas tank lid – from the Ford.

Luckily, all of the lights were intact, and nothing was falling or hanging from the vehicle. The incurred damage was all cosmetic.

He looked out at the road they were on, one that ran a few hours north of the city. It was a two-lane highway which moved as needed around the lakes and heavy forest of the area. The cars which went by were regular, but not plentiful. He eyed the driver of each one, aware that the shifters were likely on high alert – searching both the city and the roads between Toronto and Brayson for him.

The gas pump stopped with a bang. He walked over to it and put the hose back on the pump, closing the cover on his car.

“So,” Sabrina walked up to him, a couple of water bottles and bags of chips in her hands. “What’s even the plan when we arrive in that town? Get killed?”

Robert looked around, staring down a woman who was filling her Ford Focus a few pumps away.

“We’ll go over it in the car,” he muttered.

Nodding, she marched around to the passenger side as he eyed the woman once again before getting in on his side.
