My opinion of Red Rum Academy changed the moment Ripley volunteered to take me on as a project. Whether it was in my best interest or hers, she was as keen as I was to shift whatever it was in my way of discovering my truth.

Although I still had to attend class, my schedule changed to include private, one on one sessions with her, and other specialist teachers she thought may be able to help us on our mission.

Extra meditation sessions encroaching on my private time were easy enough to cope with. Meant to relax me, there was no point investing time if I was going to get antsy about them. Besides, it was easy enough to work around the other activities I chose to participate in. Even my diet got a mention. Sugar was now a big no-no, as was animal flesh—seafood the only exception, and probably the only meat product I’d never really indulging in as my budget didn’t stretch to cover such extravagance. Tasty enough, even now I didn’t feel I’d been deprived. An abundance of fruit and vegetables, mostly leafy greens, for the next few weeks definitely wasn’t a hardship in my book.

“So, what’s going on with you?” Jinx set her tray down opposite to where I sat at our usual table. “Rumour has it you’re Ripley’s new fascination.”

I tipped my head back and laughed. “Geez, news sure doesn’t stay your own for long around here—sounds like you know more about it than I do.” I had no intention of keeping her in the dark about the program. Jinx had supported me from the moment I stepped on the grounds and was a big reason I believed in myself enough to stumble upon the gifts I’d discovered thus far. Truth be known, she’d help me discover a whole lot more and faster than if I was seeking answers on my own.

“Someone mentioned she pulled you out of class and everything.” Her eyes were wide as if it were something more shocking than a principle taking interest in a students’ progress—or lack of. “I’ve never heard of her doing that for anyone.”

“How long have you been here?” I picked up a carrot stick and, taking little bites with my front teeth, gnawed it down to my fingers.

“That’s beside the point. All I’m trying to say is that she must see potential in you or else she wouldn’t bother.” The awe in her tone should’ve come as a compliment, but it just managed to piss me off. I was sick of not fitting in, being a dud in the sea of faces that blending with the next super human being contained within the school grounds.

“Or, she might see me as a danger to my fellow students and she wants to tame me before I do any actual damage.” I shrugged, picked up another carrot stick and repeated the gnawing technique.

“Ha. Good point.” Lighthearted Jinx was back. “She’s always fascinated me. Is she as hard assed as she appears?”

“How do you mean?” I continued to devour carrot sticks as she summed up her impression of Ripley.
